Hazli Sham Kassim

Senior General Manager, Integrated Hydrocarbon Management, Malaysia Petroleum Management


Hazli Sham Kassim is the current President of the Malaysian Gas Association, a non-profit organization comprising 150 members with mission to promote the advancement of a sustainable Malaysian gas industry through advocacy, communication and education.

He is also currently the Senior General Manager, Integrated Hydrocarbon Management, Malaysia Petroleum Management, at PETRONAS, the national oil company of Malaysia and listed in the Fortune 500. Malaysia Petroleum Management is the regulator for the upstream oil and gas activities in Malaysia.

Hazli holds a BSc in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA. He started his professional career in 1995 when he joined PETRONAS in Malaysia as a petroleum engineer. Since then, he has worked in several countries including the USA and Indonesia, holding several leading technical positions at PETRONAS, mostly in the upstream business, both onshore and offshore assignments.

Before returning to Malaysia in 2016, Hazli was the Country Chairman, PETRONAS Indonesia. During his leadership there, PETRONAS achieved its inaugural first oil and first gas in Indonesia from its own operated blocks and he became the first board member of Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) representing PETRONAS (January 2016 – June 2016).

In his 22 years with PETRONAS, Hazli has held the following posts:

  • Country Chairman, PETRONAS Indonesia & President Director of PETRONAS Indonesia upstream companies

  • Head, Enhanced Oil Recovery Center, PETRONAS Carigali

  • General Manager, Resource Enhancement, Petroleum Resource Development, Petroleum Management Unit, PETRONAS

  • Senior Manager, Reservoir Engineering, PETRONAS Carigali

  • Subsurface Team Leader, Baram Field, PETRONAS Carigali

  • Senior Reservoir Engineer, Chad Project Consortium led by ExxonMobil

Hazli has also been member of Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) since 1991 and was the chairperson of SPE-KL Section for the term 2010 –2013. He has played various roles in conferences committee/taskforce including the inaugural OTC Asia in Kuala Lumpur.
