The global momentum to tackle climate change has gained pace since COP26 including Southeast Asia. ASEAN countries made pledges towards net zero in 2021. Strong COVID-19 recovery has driven robust energy demand growth and the energy commodities crunch in 2021, however, cast challenges for secure, affordable and low-carbon energy access.
The 2022 outlook for ASEAN’s energy sector is cautious optimistic amidst the ongoing pandemic, driven by the economic developments and growing energy needs. The climate agenda has affirmed the role of gas and accelerated the renewables investment. Notably the oil & gas sector has embraced the energy transition through shift in strategies, investment in low carbon technologies, such as carbon capture, energy storage and digitalisation.
